One day in 2020, in her Studio, Halima received a package of her childhood artwork from her Father's belongings upon his passing. In it she found beautiful abstract paintings - broad strokes, drips, and big primary colours. Halima wept, for she had just been asking herself whether or not she was an artist, and what her style might be? Her child said, 'there is no searching, there is only unfolding'. Through a series of seemingly disastrous creative moves, Halima copied one of her childhood pieces and glued it to the canvas and mimicked the bold marks she made as a child. The glued paper bubbled and peeled and her bold marks were only imitations. Over the following 4 years, she made moves to peel the paper, abandoning the canvas for long periods when she could not salvage the mess. The scar left from the peeled paper left the most beautiful pattern and from there she painted this Self-Portrait. She knew. She knows.
